UPRTOU, Allahabad was established under Uttar Pradesh Rajrishi Tandon Open University Act 1999 Uttar Pradesh ( Act No. 10, 1999). The University was established to provide higher education by distance education mode in the state. The first academic session of the university started from July 1999. UGC, New Delhi has recognized the Degrees.

UPRTOU opened its study centre at Multanimal Modi College, Modinagar in 2003. Initially the University had sanctioned 66 Courses including MBA & MCA at present. It is providing facilities for 66 Courses. The study centre has strength of 45 counsellors and five non-teaching / office staff.

UPRTOU provides education by distance mode. It provides study materials and other learning aids in Audio-Video form . Admission & Examination are held twice a year in the months of December and July. Professionals courses offered by the University are quite popular among students.
