“To strive, to seek, to find and not to yield,” is the motto that lies at the foundation of the department of English. The fifty-seven-year old department cherishes the vision of making itself a dynamic, ever-evolving center of learning where each and every day is looked forward to with eagerness and enthusiasm to know more and explore more. It upholds the mission of making English literature and language an integral part of students’ lives through its two programmes namely, B.A. and M.A. In this regard, faculty members of the department are assisted by a language laboratory and smart classroom. The latter two components of the department form a zone where teaching/learning of language and literature pulsates with life by virtue of its being interactive in approach. On the one hand, students’ language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing are shaped and honed in the language lab by means of the latest language software that runs on twenty computers.
On the other hand, smart classrooms with screenings of documentaries, educational movies, videos of interviews/biographies of authors and the like make teaching/ learning more of joyful sharing and exchange of thoughts, ideas and feelings. Together, the two components address the need of the hour vis-á-vis amalgamation of teaching/learning of language and literature, and of making today’s youth a member of the global community with English as its second language. Furthermore, they ensure that students do not merely read literature or learn language theoretically but they also reflect deeply and feel sharply and become a part of what they read/watch/listen to.
